Perylene units

A typical example involves the perylene monoimide donors described above. They have been used to construct antenna models in which up to eight perylene units were covalently bound to a zinc(II) porphyrin94. Osuka and coworkers windmill porphyrins also present excellent antenna complex building blocks (vide infra)95. In addition, several porphyrin wheel antenna complexes were prepared by template-assisted synthesis96,97 or self-aggregation98. Intramolecular cyclization of porphyrin dodecamers to a porphyrin wheel has also been achieved99. 

Moore et al. used a convergent approach to construct first- to sixth-generation dendrons based on arylacetylene units. These were functionalised at the focal point with a - fluorescent - perylene unit and investigated with regard to their flu-... 

Precursor family 27 with a perylene sub-unit were prepared due to their fluorescent properties and their photostability. Grafting of the perylene unit with —(CH2)3Si(OR)3 arms (Section m.B) allows their solubility to be increased and thus to prepare materials... 

Polymers 340-343 have a deep red or brown color probably related to the presence of conjugated polynuclear units. A similar color was noted in the polymers derived from cation-radical polymerization of 1,1 -binaphthyl and o-terphenyl. In these cases the color was attributed to the presence of cation-radicals of perylene and triphenylene structural units [193,201,203]. Perylene units are possible in polymers 340-343 (Fig. 46).

The modulated structure was solved more recently by Lam et al. [101] and the results show that the structure modulation is essentially associated with the Co-S apical coordination, denoting possible fluctuations in the Co oxidation state. This picture is also consistent with the band structure calculation performed in the framework of the extended Hiickel approximation, indicating as most favourable a partial charge transfer of slightly less than one electron per perylene unit, as... 

These compounds can be prepared either by a two-step synthesis involving homocoupling of perylene monobromide 86 to bis-perylene derivative 87 followed by cyclodehydrogenation or by a one-pot, direct coupling of two perylene units 89 under strong basic conditions.
