Periodic Trends in the Transition Elements

We wiii iook at the generai properties of transition metais in the first section of the chapter in the second section we wiii investigate the chemistry of two transition eiements, chromium and copper. The remaining sections of the chapter wiii cover the structure, naming, and bonding of compiex ions and coordination compounds. 

The transition elements have a number of characteristics that set them apart from the main-group elements  

The classification into the B groups of transition elements and the inner-transition elements. 

The test tubes contain,left to right V03 (ag),pale yellow bright blue V +,gray-blue V, vIolet.The oxidation states of vanadium are, left to right, -1-5, +4, -1-3,and -f 2. 

Transition-metal compounds are often colored, and many are paramagnetic. Most compounds of the main-group metals are colorless and diamagnetic.
