Perfluoroacetic anhydride

The utility of perfluoroacetic anhydride as a medium for promoting esterifications is well known [54] and, again, is based on the stability of the trifluoroacetate ion (Figure 8.6). 

Trifluoroacetic acid, perfluoroacetic anhydride and perfluoroethyl ether all exhibit complex kinetic behaviour for their decompositions. 

Perfluoroacetic anhydride decomposes at 216-320 °C to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and trifluoroacetyl fluoride above 320 °C tetrafluoroethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene are also produced. Corbett and Whittle observed an apparent kinetic order between 0.2 and 0.6, depending upon the reaction conditions. 

The large volume of data on H-abstraction reactions of CF3 radicals is shown in Table 25. Most of the results have been obtained by generating the radicals from the photolysis of hexafluoroacetone, which is particularly convenient since the reaction scheme involves no attack of the CF3 radicals on the parent ketone (C—F bonds are too strong to be broken in ordinary atom or radical transfer reactions). More recently, the photolyses of trifluoromethyl iodide [301, 302] and perfluoroacetic anhydride [290] have also been utilized with equal success.
