The remarkable biological effect [1] of P-lactam antibiotics [2] (Scheme 1) results from their capacity to disrupt the biosynthesis of the bacterial cell wall. They do this by inhibiting D,D-transpeptidases [3], which are involved in the peptidoglycan cross-linking. 

The antibacterial activity of BLAs is due to the inhibition of transpeptidase enzymes which are involved in bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. The transpeptidases or PBPs catalyze peptidoglycan cross-linking.
