Patagonia

While 1 was in Argentina in 1955, Sabato took me to visit a brand new laboratory in Patagonia, deep in the south , near the ski resort of San Carlos de Bariloche. This was, and still is, the Centro Atomico de Bariloche (CAB). It is an institution (formally part of a local university) for research and teaching in physics, ranging from particle physics to solid-state physics. Its origin is one of the most curious in the entire history of academe.

In experimenting with recycled PET, Feuerstein came up with a high-tech use for "inferior" polyester fiber. He invented a warm, synthetic fleece that he called Polar Fleece (later changed to PolartecJ.Then he struck a deal with the outfitting company Patagonia to market outdoor apparel made from his PET fleece (Fenichell 1996),... 

The question of whether variations in content in wood samples taken from western North America can be used to document worldwide secular variations in radiocarbon values seemingly has been answered by studies of the concentrations in tree rings from Patagonia, Argentina, Canada, and Europe. The maximum contemporaneous deviation noted was between the southern and northern hemisphere, but it did not exceed...

The method works in the western USA (Liu et al., 2000), western China (Zhou et al., 2000), North Africa (Cremaschi, 1996) and Patagonia (T. Liu, personal communication, 2001), with the notation that these different regions require different calibrations. Liu s (2003, 2006) calibration for the Great Basin of the western USA extends back to before 140,000 ka. Greyscale illustrations do not do the method justice, but Figure 8.10 shows that progressively older varnishes display progressively more detailed VML sequences.
