Consider a homogeneously fluidized bed in equilibrium. If the particles are now subjected to a small force, they will move to restore the equilibrium condition. How fast they do this will depend on the specific system properties the greater the velocity of the particles, the more uniformly held together will be the suspension, and vice versa. A parameter that could provide a measure of this effect, the bulk mobility Bp of the particles , has been proposed by Batchelor (1988) in the development of a model for fluidization that is structurally similar to the particle bed model. He defines Bp as the ratio of the (small additional) mean velocity, relative to zero-volume-flux axes, to the (small additional) steady force applied to each particle of a homogeneous dispersion .
