Faux patinas. Patina paints are meant to create a patinalike visual effect on metal. One useful technique is to lightly sponge turquoise paint over bronze primer. No paint will give the full effect of a real metal patina, but it s always good to have a nontoxic paint alternative. [Pg.316]

Painting zinc and aluminium makes special demands on the pre-treatment of the substrate. Chromate treatment provides a good basis for paint, and it is still in widespread use in spite of the toxicity of chromate. Phosphate treatment or washpriming can also be used. Alternatives for aluminium are light blast cleaning or anodizing. [Pg.298]

The macroscopic composites are those in which one or both phases tend to have structures large enough to be easily seen with the naked eye. These include paint hlms (paint itself is usually a particulate composite), adhesive joints, and foams (e.g., the familiar polystyrene foams used for coffee cups because of their low heat transfer coefficient). The fabric laminates alternate layers of inorganic cloth and plastic. An important subclass usually has multiple layers of glass cloth or chopped fiber interspersed with layers of unsaturated polyester-styrene AB-cross-linked materials see Section 2.7.3. These sheet molding compounds are widely used for the hulls of pleasure boats, because they are light weight and very puncture resistant, as well as for automotive bodies see Section 13.9.1. [Pg.692]

A different strategy was adopted by Ford. The company recycles the PC/PBT Xenoy alloy bumpers (afer removing 99.7% of paint) into tail light assemblies. Alternatively, by adding 25 wt% of the recycled material to virgin resin, it is used to mold bumpers, guide brackets, etc. In 1996, the company used 17.5 kton, or 17%, of post-consumer recycled resin. The recyclates content is to grow steadily to 50% in the year 2000 [19]. [Pg.341]
