The packed bed heat exchanger considered here is that used in recent experimental studies (, ) and shown schematically in Figure 1. The long unheated calming section, (a), and the heated test section, (b), are each considered to be semi-infinite and packed with similar solid particles. There is a step change in wall temperature at the plane z = 0, which is represented by the Heaviside step function in equation C6).

The RFSG has a pair of regenerative packed-bed heat exchangers at the air inlet and product gas outlet, with foe gas flow reversing typically every 20 minutes. The heat exchangers are modelled using a one-dimensional flnite diflerence technique, after Schmidt and Willmott [4].
