Ozone toward hydrogen, reactivity

The reactivity of ozone toward primary, secondary, and tertiary hydrogens was determined from experiments where 2-methylbutane was ozonized. These experiments were performed at 0°C. to decrease solvent loss by evaporation during ozonation. To simplify the analysis of the products, the reaction mixture following ozonation was reduced with lithium aluminum hydride. The relative reactivity per hydrogen, calculated from the observed quantities of the four isomeric Cr, alcohols, is primary, 1 secondary, 13 tertiary, 110. These values are time independent for up to 1 hour ozonation. However, they ma not be a com-... [Pg.18]

If compounds already react very fast with ozone, the addition of hydrogen peroxide is nearly ineffective, which was shown by Brunet et al. (1984) in the case of benzaldehyde and phthalic acid. The functional groups on the aromatic ring are relatively reactive towards molecular ozone. The advantage of this process lies in the removal of compounds relatively non-reactive with ozone. It was shown that the oxidation of oxalic acid, which is often an end product in the case of molecular ozone reactions, was significantly accelerated with the addition of hydrogen peroxide. [Pg.149]

The rate constants of the reaction of 2,6-dimethyloct-7-en-2-ol separately with ozone and hydroxyl radical, in the gas phase, have been determined. The OH radical can either abstract hydrogen or add to the double bond. Ozone adds to the double bond. The formation of acetone, 2-methylpropanal, 2-methylbutanal, ethanedial, and 2-oxopropanal was discussed.191 The rate laws and activation parameters for the ozone oxidation of alcohols in aqueous solution have been determined and explained on the basis of formation of an ozone-alcohol complex.192 The reactivity of alkenes towards ozone, in aqueous solution, correlates well with Taft s equation.193... [Pg.113]
