When fewer than three hydrogen bonds exist to satisfy the oxygen valence of a siloxy group, as for example in some hydrous layer silicates mentioned above, then they need to be stronger (yielding a low-field shift in proton NMR) and/or additional interaction partners should be present. [Pg.203]

F centers may act as adsorption centers not only in the alkali halides, but in any other crystals as well. Take, for example, a crystal of ZnO, in which the F center is an oxygen valency with two (not one ) electrons localized near it, as depicted in Fig. 30. From the chemical point of view such a center represents two adjacent localized free valencies of like sign which on an ideal surface could never meet because of Coulomb repulsion between them. (This should be especially stressed.) As a result of this property, such an F center may play a specific role in catalysis acting as an active center for a number of reactions. [Pg.254]

A further argument was advanced by Veal et al.. A linear relationship was found to exist between the XPS intensity of the main oxygen valence band and the oxygen-to-uranium ratio of the different uranium oxides investigated (Fig. 23). A different aspect of AES concerns shifts in the observed peak energies that are due to chemical shifts of atomic core levels. Thus one is able to distinguish between atoms in different chemical environments (in a way analogous to XPS). In particular, studies of different oxidation states of oxygen adsorbed on metals have shown chemical shifts that grow with increasing oxygen valency. [Pg.43]
