Oxygen atom generation

Dimethylsilanone (97) is also formed in the oxygenation of 95 with oxygen atoms generated by a microwave discharge of an Ar/02 stream and subsequent matrix isolation of the reaction products101. 

Cocondensation in solid argon of SiO and oxygen atoms, generated by a microwave discharge, yields SiC>2109. SiO, (SiO)2 and (SiO)3 are well-known species110,111 and can be obtained when molecular oxygen is passed over heated silicon (at about 1500 K)112. 

Although the fate of the oxygen atoms generated remains to be identified, the foregoing enquiry may be seen to support the earlier conclusion that Kirkby s experimental data are explicable quantitatively in terms of a reaction mechanism in which the second step involves the interaction of hydrogen atoms with oxygen. 

The involvement of light in this initiating reaction provides the term photochemical smog. It is plausible to expect that the oxygen atoms generated by this reaction can then form ozone by the reaction... 

Upon studying the ozone-induced oxidative conversion of methane to methanol and ethane to ethanol it has been established that these reactions do not occur in the absence of ozone which clearly suggests that the partial oxidation is initiated by the oxygen atoms generated from the ozone decomposition [75, 97],...
