Other Catenanes and Rotaxanes

The successful construction of the single-metal catenane 4 inspired a series of subsequent studies in which catenanes based on more than one metal ion were synthesised.  

A wide range of other related catenanes and polycatenanes, many designed with particular functions in mind, have been reported.By way of example, a system was constructed to act as a potential model for aspects of the electron-transfer

Corresponding symmetrical, bis-porphyrin derivatives, as well as larger entities incorporating bis-porphyrin and bis-catenane groups - see 12 - have also been investigated.
