Ammonium hexabromoosmate(IV) crystallizes as minute black cubes and octahedra. The compound dissolves sparingly in cold water to give a red solution. Hot aqueous solutions deposit black osmium(IV) oxide. The compound is soluble in warm glycerol or ethylene glycol but is insoluble in ethanol or methanol. [Pg.206]

Osmium (VIII) oxide is reduced in the cold by a stream of H3. If, however, the OsO is heated in the H3 stream, the product is the metal. Osmium (IV) oxide can also be prepared by heating a fine powder consisting of a mixture of K30sCla and three times its amount of NasCOa. The temperature should be lower than red heat the cooled product Is extracted with water which is slightly acidified with dilute hydrochloric acid. The product is perfectly pure OSO3. [Pg.1603]

OSmium(IV) oxide (osmium tetroxide OSO4) A volatile yellow crystalline solid with a penetrating odor, used as an oxidizing agent and, in aqueous solution, as a catalyst for organic reactions. [Pg.201]
