The organolithium synthesis proved to be the simplest and most convenient route to organogermanium compounds, including those carrying bulky substitutes on the Ge atom. The method was first used in 1930 by Kraus and Brown198 and found many applications shortly after. 

Germanium dioxide (104) occurs as a component of natural minerals and meteorites. It has been widely used as a starting material in inorganic synthesis and recently in the synthesis of organogermanium compounds. For these reasons the possibility of detecting 104 by means of NMR spectroscopy is intriguing not only from a theoretical but also from a purely practical point of view.
