Organoantimony and organobismuth compounds

An intriguing 3-coordinate organoantimony compound, which is the first example of trigonal-planar Sb, has been characterized. The stibinidene complex [PhSb Mn(CO)2(rj -CsH5))2] has been isolated as shiny golden metallic crystals (mp 128°) from the crown-ether catalysed reaction

The structure is shown in Fig. 13.28a the interatomic angles and distances suggest that the bridging PhSb group is stabilized by Sb-Mn 7T interactions. A similar route leads to 3-coordinate planar organoarsinidine complexes which can also be prepared by the following reaction sequence  

The chloro-derivative [ClAs Mn(CO)2-(/j -C5H5) 2] (shiny black crystals, mp 124°) can now be much more readily obtained by direct reaction of AsCb with [Mn(CO)2- 

Me2SbCl3 is monomeric with equatorial methyl groups (C21,) in solution (CH2CI2, CHCI3 or CeFIe) but forms CTbridged dimers with trans methyl groups ( 2 ) in the solid

The organoantimony and organobismuth compounds in oxidation states I-in also exhibit strong intermolecular interactions, which lead to secondary bonds between molecules in forming chain-like, layer-type, and three-dimensional supramolecular structures. Figure 15.6.4 shows the structures of three organometallic compounds of Sb and Bi. 

In the present review, the methods of synthesis of organoantimony and organobismuth compounds will be surveyed. Typical and recent methods have been selected from a large number of reported methods.
