Organization, Nomenclature, and Use of the Report

The introduction to the Part II Report was revised extensively in the previous volume and that chapter, which covered in detail Scope and Coverage of the Report Organization, Nomenclature, and Use of the Report Significant Advances in Macromolecular Carbohydrate Chemistry and Conclusions and Readership , is classified as essential reading for any new reader of this Series of Part II Reports. 

This present Chapter essentially builds upon the corresponding Chapter of the previous Volume which may be regarded as the ground state. 

This is largely unchanged, but in the last few years a number of additonal biochemical journals have been published and these have been added to the journal coverage list. The inclusion of reports of principal carbohydrate (-containing) macromolecules in the new Specialist Periodical Reports series entitled Macromolecular Chemistry is not a duplication of, or a competitor to, Carbohydrate Chemistry, Part 11 . For the specialists, and the readers who want information on the broader field of both synthetic and natural macromolecules, the similarities and differences between them, and an overview of the uses of all types of macromolecules including carbohydrate, proteins, and nucleic acids, Macromolecular Chemistry is appropriate. 

A text, which is a complete treatment of all phases of Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics at the undergraduate level, includes a chapter on biological macromolecules, which are treated with exceptional thoroughness. 

Whereas organization and use of Part II Report are unchanged, clearly the subject of nomenclature is one of a state of flux. By the end of 1980, many of the draft documents of the lUB-IUPAC Joint Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature relating to carbohydrates should have been finalized. At that
