Organic importance

A scheme that was initiated by a Dutch organic importer, Eosta B V, deserves special mention. In its Nature More scheme, products are scored in terms of compliance with organic, health and environmental standards. This is done as an add-on to the organic certification process. By entering a code that is on the product label, the consumer can see how the product he or she purchased scores. It is a communication tool that links the farmers to the consumers. 

Modern approaches based on the use of molecular techniques presumed to circumvent the need for culturing prokaryotes, fail to provide sufficient and reliable information for estimation of prokaryote diversity. Many properties that make these organisms important members of the living world are amenable to observation only through the study of living cultures. Since current culture techniques do not always satisfy the need of providing a balanced picture of the microflora composition, future developments in the study of bacterial diversity should include improvements in the culture methods to approach as closely as possible the conditions of natural habitats. Molecular methods of microflora analysis have an important role as guides for the isolation of new prokaryotic taxa. 

There is a family of criteria employed to prioritize investments in collection of genomic sequence data intensively studied organisms, important human pathogens, comparative genomics, ecological and economic impacts, and key basic scientific issues. 

For most drugs, their concentration is a function of dose, as well as of the individual s rates of metabolism and elimination, which are relatively stable unless a moderating variable intervenes. Examples of such moderating variables include diseases that affect organs important for metabolism or elimination (e.g., liver or heart), or if the patient is exposed to a concurrent agent that induces or inhibits the GYP enzyme responsible for the biotransformation of the drug of interest. 

Over the past few decades the Black Sea has been seriously perturbed by climatic change and intensive anthropogenic contamination. Some nutrients have increased (e.g., NO3 due to eutrophication) while others have decreased (e.g., Si due to Danube river dams construction) [22]. Organisms imported as part of international shipping (e.g., Mnemiopsis and Beroe) have contributed to modification of the natural ecosystem. Understanding the natural temporal variability of the hydrochemistry of the Black Sea is important when trying to determine the effects of these anthropogenic perturbations. 

Current procedures should be improved to further facilitate the process of setting Codex MRLs. In order to avoid potential trade disruption, the process should be improved to between 2-4 years, and should not exceed 4 years to provide any practical value. The established Codex MRLs should stay longer than 10 years before a periodic review takes place. To avoid trade vulnerabilities, interim MRLs should be made available immediately after the JMPR evaluation. This should remain for 2-3 years, a period sufficient for further comments and evaluation by national governments and other organizations. Importing countries should justify with science-based evidence for the non-acceptance of these interim MRLs.

Figure 3.20 gives an overview of substances which are classified as very toxic for aquatic organisms. Important toxic chemicals for the aquatic environment are summarized in Figure 3.21. Figure 3.22 shows a number of substances with R52/53. 

Fisheries scientists continue to explore aquatic and marine bioresources for pharmaceuticals, nutra-ceuticals, and novel biomaterials as well as investigate distribution and biodiversity of marine organisms important to industrial utilization. In finding innovative uses for aquatic and marine products and thereby increasing the value of specific fish stocks, fisheries scientists also make more likely the prospect that a given stock will be more sustainably harvested over the long term.
