A man who works with his hands is a laborer a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist. 

Competition in the biological world is usually so great that there is no room for inefficiency. At every turn, in all environments, energy must be conserved where possible because extra energy means better defenses, or better growth, or better ability to gamer resources. In all cases, these lead to better reproductive success.
