Optically Active Derivatives of Disilanes

Optically active monosilanes were investigated in detail, mostly by Sommer and coworkers526). Investigations of disilanes are very rare, with only a few published papers. 

The first investigation was done by Kipping381 He synthesized an asymmetric disilane  

In the studies of optically active monosilanes, a second optically active disilane was prepared in 1965527  

This is the first stereospecific cleavage of a Si—Si bond by an alkali metal. Functional optically active disilanes were first prepared in 1967 by Sommer et al.528, 529, and the optically active isomers were successfully separated. 

In this investigation, the Walden rearrangement with disilanes was first observed
