Open-faced letters

Furthermore, traditional notation for scalars, vectors and variables will be adopted. A scalar of fixed value, e.g., the number of factors in a model, is represented by an italicized capitol, A. An italicized lowercase letter, e.g., the nth factor, represents a scalar of arbitrary value. All vectors are column vectors designated by lowercase bold, e.g., x. Matrices are given by uppercase bold, e.g., X, and cubes (third-order tensors by uppercase open-face letters, e.g., R. Transposes of matrices and vectors, defined by switching the row and column indices, is designated with a superscript T, e.g., xT. The transpose of a cube need not be defined for this chapter. Subscripts designate a specific element of a higher-order tensor, where the initial order is inferred by the number of subscripts associated with the scalar. 

Script (91) and open-faced (IR also known as blackboard boldface) letters are available but should not be used routinely. For open-faced letters, only uppercase is available. 

Note Wavelengths are listed as CWL (center wavelengths). Letters in Design column represent Open-faced (O), Flow-through (F), or Both (B). Letters in Application column represent Lakes (L), Marine (M), Rivers (R), and Wastewater (W).

Letters from unknown sources should first be screened by security personnel. If opened, letters allegedly containing anthrax or another toxin should be handled carefully. Note if there was a puff of dust or particles from the envelope when it was opened and be sure to report that when assistance arrives. Carefully place such a letter and its envelope in a sealed plastic pouch. Thoroughly wash face and hands with warm soapy water before calling for assistance. 

The two hippocampal formations in the brain resemble an inverted V as viewed from above (see Fig. 1 A).
