Ontong Java ocean plateau

They include continental flood basalts of the type found in the Deccan plateau in India or the Karoo province of southern Africa, and, where the volcanism is within oceanic crust, oceanic plateaus. Most Mesozoic and Cenozoic LIPs had an original areal extent of more than a million km2 and represent magma volumes of up to 4 million km3. The Ontong Java oceanic plateau has a lava volume of 6 million km3 and when extrusive and intrusive components are aggregated a total volume of 44.4 million km3 (Ernst et al., 2005).

Are the cyclic, bimodal, mafic to felsic sequences such as those of the Abitibi greenstone belt compatible with an oceanic plateau origin The zircon inheritance as well as the abimdance of felsic volcanic rocks seem incompatible with such an origin. Hence, where are the Ontong-Java plateaux of the past (cf. Kerr et al. 2000) ... 

In the oceans, hot-spots are recognised as areas that are shallower than normal ocean floor of the same age. Sometimes they are contemporaneous with spreading, as in Iceland. Other hot-spots postdate the ocean floor by tens of millions of years, as in the Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain, or give rise to oceanic plateaux, such as the Ontong Java plateau in the southwest Pacific.
