These functional studies have been strongly supported by molecular studies in which the individual receptor types are labeled with green fluorescent protein (GFP) and their projections to the olfactory glomeruli are mapped [28]. This has revealed a common coimection rule the subset of cells expressing a given receptor typically project their axons to one of two glomeruli, on the medial and lateral aspects of the olfactory bulb. A map of the projections of olfactory sensory neuron subsets expressing different odor receptors thus underlies the activity maps. This relationship is dynamic because it reflects the moment-to-moment functional state of the system. [Pg.99]
