1 Flow Between Two Platelets Under Distributed Water Viscosity for Pure Water 

The water in the neighborhood of the smectitic clay surface is structured due to the hydrogen bond, and the viscosity varies inversely with distance from the surface. In this case we can apply the finite element method to solve the microscale equations (8.20) and (8.21), as described previously. 

The C-permeability can then be calculated as a function of the distance between two platelets (Fig. 8.7) it can clearly been seen that the permeability obtained from the MD/HA procedure is considerably smaller than when using constant viscosity.
