Numbers in the Three Societies

Source Membership data from the Annual Reports of the three societies. [Pg.144]

The overwhelming majority of members were men. It was only in 1920 that the CS granted equal membership to women. The IC admitted women from 1892 on and the SCI appears never to have excluded them, although all the founding members were male. However, on the eve of the First World War, only a handful of women (under ten in the IC) had joined either organization. [Pg.144]
