Nova Accident

This accident occurred on December 6, 1985 when an oil tanker named Nova collided with an ultra large crude oil carrier named Magnum about 90 miles southeast of Khark Island in the Gulf of Iran [40]. Both the tankers were used as shuttle vessels for transporting oil between Khark Island and another island called Sirri Island in the area. The accident occurred due to the lack of running lights on both tankers. [Pg.100]

The Nova tanker was carrying 188,000 tons of Iranian light crude oil and the collision damaged its five cargo tanks that resulted in a spill of around 70,000 tons of oil. Additional information on this accident is available in Reference 40. [Pg.100]

This accident occurred on November 10, 1988 when a Liberian oil tanker named "Odyssey" carrying 132,157 tons of North Sea Brent crude oil broke into two sections and sank in heavy weather 700 miles off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada [3,30]. As the vessel sank, fire started on its stem section and then the surrounding crude oil caught fire. Canadian Coast Guard was only able to come within approximately 1.75 miles of the burning vessel because of the rough weather conditions. [Pg.98]
