Another method used for the synthesis of C, D-Ni(ATDC) has been the anaerobic cyclization of nonamethyl bilinogen [75] illustrated in Fig. 27. This linear tetrapyrrole has been obtained by reduction of the corresponding dihy-drobilin dihydrobromide salt with NaBH4 in 80% aqueous methanol. 

In the context of a chemical study related to problems of vitamin B12 biosynthesis, peripheral C-methylation of the magnesium complex of tctct-OEPc (17) was reported to yield a mixture of isomeric products (18a-c) (83AG(E)631). A similar reaction was found to occur at C-12 of nonamethyl pyrrocorphin (19). One of the by-products of this reaction is the seco-corphinoid derivative 20, which, on complexation with Ni(II) acetate, cyclizes to give an Ni(II) corrinate (21) (84CC583). 

The branched diamines discussed previously have nine carbon atoms. Entirely different diamine structures can be built up from nine carbon atoms. Three products (diamines) with characteristically different carbon skeletons were available an unbranched linear product (nonamethyl-enediamine), a branched product, (trimethylhexamethylenediamine), and a cycloaliphatic compound (IPD) with 10 carbon atoms. Thermodynamic considerations during the formation of the six-membered rings indicate that only one of the rings is initially formed, resulting in a new Si-CHBr-Si bridging group. Depending on whether the Br atom is equatorial or axial, the second cyclization step will lead to a trans- or cis-1,1,3,3,5,7,7,9,9-nonamethyl-1,3,5,7,9-penta-sila-decaline.
