Non or Low Migratory Biocides

Triclosan is widely used as an anti-baeterial additive in produets like toothpaste. However, it has also been found in fish and breast milk (a.21) and so this currently gives this produet a more questionable profile when used in plasties. [Pg.25]

This may not be an issue for most plastie applieations except upon disposal or reoyeling. However, there is also some eoneem about the overuse of some aetives like Triclosan that may lead to an inereased toleranee of bacteria to antimierobial agents (a.22). This is eertainly not yet proven but it is proposed that Trielosan aets as a site-specifie inhibitor by mimieking a natural ehemieal enoyl-ACP. E. coli eould aequire resistanee to this by a mutation of one of its genes (114). [Pg.25]
