A commonly applied alternative to fighting pathogenic microbes with soluble biocides is to prevent their proliferation, which majorly occurs on surfaces composed of virtually any material in the form of biofilms. Surface modifications that prevent the formation of biofilms are not only hindering the spread of infections, but also protect the materials from deterioration. While nature has applied the concept of non-fouling surfaces, known from the excellent non-fouling activity of albumin, microbe-killing surfaces seem to be a concept beyond nature s imagination . 

Peptoids represent mimics of natural peptides, whose residues are chemically bonded to the nitrogen instead of the a-carbon atoms. This modification makes them more stable in contrast to peptides. In general, peptoides and peptides have proven themselves as effective non-fouling surface coatings, even for more than five months. ... 

For biomedical applications, which will only be considered in this review, it could be mentioned that Kataoka and co-workers [327] prepared non-fouling surfaces by coating them with core-polymerized PEG-PLA block copolymer micelles having an aldehyde-ended PEG shell.
