Non-formal learning environments

As a result of the relevance and motivating character of substances like natural vanilla and artificial alternatives, a non-formal learning environment was developed. The learning environment focuses on comparing natural vanilla and artificial vanillin. It deals with analysing food and drinks to determine whether they contain natural vanilla or synthetic alternatives. It also provides the opportunity to learn how the synthesis of artificial vanillin can be improved taking the philosophy of green chemistry into consideration. [Pg.84]

The feedback from both the students and the teachers indicates that partially non-formal learning environments, as described here, have the potential to increase students attitudes and motivation towards chemistry and science learning. Although there were many high expectations, the expectations of the teachers and students seemed to have been fulfilled. Most teachers expressed themselves positively after the laboratory session. The results... [Pg.88]
