Nomenclature of haloalkanes

Haloalkanes with simple structures are often given a common name consisting of the name of the alkyl group followed by the name of the halide that is, they are named as alkyl haUdes. A few common examples are shown below. [Pg.288]

Haloalkanes are named in the lUPAC system by an extension of the rules we oudined earlier for alkanes. [Pg.289]

Identify the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms that includes the hydroxyl group this is, the parent chain. [Pg.289]

If the parent chain has branching alkyl groups, number the chain from the end nearer the first substituent whether it is an alkyl group or a halogen atom. [Pg.289]

If the compound contains two or more halogen atoms of the same type, indicate them with the [Pg.289]
