Incidence density rates of ventilator-associated pneumonia and nonventilator-associated pneumonia (reported by the NNIS system) from 1990 to 1996 are shown in Figure 2. On average, ventilator-associated pneumonia rates are 9.3 times higher than nonventilator-associated pneumonia rates, ranging from 2.6 times higher in respiratory ICUs to 19 times higher in burn ICUs.
