Japan. Straight TNAns, under the name of Type 91>was used during WW II in AP shells and bombs such as in jet-driven suicide planes (Refs 52a,53,54 57). Its mixtures with AN and some HE s were used by both Army Navy. These included A(ko) or Type A, called also Otsu-B[TNAns(or TNT) 60 HNDPhA 24 A1 16%) (Ref 52a Ref 53, p 32) - it was intended to replace Type 97H, called also Seigata (TNT 60 HNDPhA 40%)in torpedo warheads B4 or Type 2 (incendiary expl contg TNAns 60 or 70 AI powder 40 or 30%) (Ref 52a) "E (Explosive),called also Nitrolit (TNAns 60 AN 40%) (Refs 52a ... 

During the 1914-1918 War trinitroanisole was manufactured in Germany under the names of Nitrolit, Trinol and An. It was used alone or in admixture with ammonium nitrate, hexyl, or hexanitrodiphenyl sulphide, for filling high explosive shells and for submarine and land mines. Eventually it had to take the place of TNT.
