Nitrogen trioxide radical

The nitrogen trioxide radical has a D3/, structure (d(N ) = 120.4 pm). The spin density of nitrogen is zero for symmetrical reasons and the unpaired electron is located at the oxygen atoms.

Chemical/Physical. In an environmental chamber, nitrogen trioxide (10,000 ppb) reacted quickly with phenol (concentration 200 ppb to 1.4 ppm) to form phenoxy radicals and nitric acid (Carter et al., 1981). The phenoxy radicals may react with oxygen and nitrogen dioxide to form quinones and nitrohydroxy derivatives, respectively (Nielsen et al, 1983).

Nitrogen trioxide (NO3) is also called nitrate radical, and is formed by the reaction of O3 + NO2. Dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) is then formed from the NO3 and NO2 in the equilibrium reaction of NO3 + NO2 NiOs. The NO3 and N2O5 are important intermediates in nighttime chemistry, and their daytime concentrations are very low since NO3 absorbs solar radiation strongly and is easily photolyzed.
