Nitrogen, inorganic compounds

Lassaigne s test is obviously a test also for carbon in the presence of nitrogen. It can be used therefore to detect nitrogen in carbon-free inorganic compounds, e.g., complex nitrites, amino-sulphonic acid derivatives, etc., but such compounds must before fusion with sodium be mixed with some non-volatile nitrogen-free organic compound such as starch... 

Inert Gas Dilution. Inert gas dilution involves the use of additives that produce large volumes of noncombustible gases when the polymer is decomposed. These gases dilute the oxygen supply to the flame or dilute the fuel concentration below the flammability limit. Metal hydroxides, metal carbonates, and some nitrogen-producing compounds function in this way as flame retardants (see Flame retardants, antimony and other inorganic compounds). 

Addition compounds form with those organics that contain a donor atom, eg, ketonic oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. Thus, adducts form with amides, amines, and A/-heterocycles, as well as acid chlorides and ethers. Addition compounds also form with a number of inorganic compounds, eg, POCl (6,120). In many cases, the addition compounds are dimeric, eg, with ethyl acetate, in titanium tetrachloride-rich systems. By using ammonia, a series of amidodichlorides, Ti(NH2) Cl4, is formed (133). 

Incineration produces gases and solids, in the form of ash and slag. Combustion gases are composed primarily of carbon dioxide and water, as well as small quantities of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and small concentrations of organic and inorganic compounds.

In environmental analysis, 15N can be used to determine where nitrogen moves in the environment. Explain how 15N containing inorganic compounds might be isolated from soil and how it could be specifically determined. (Note You may wish to consult Chapters 13-15 in answering this question.)...

Also included in Table 7.7 are the nitrogen fixation reactions. These are similar to the carbon fixation reactions in that they involve the conversion of an oxidized inorganic species (N2) 1° a reduced form, such as ammonium. The fixed forms of nitrogen can be taken up by plants. As with carbon fixation, this process requires an energy source in order to proceed. Some N2 fixers are photosynthetic and others use energy obtained from the oxidation of reduced inorganic compounds. 

From theoretical aspects, the simple inorganic compounds of nitrogen may serve as model species for the clarification of elementary steps involved in electrocatalytic transformations at polycrystalline and single-crystal electrodes. 

With inorganic compounds, there can also be a selectivity problem, as illustrated by the oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen. Deep oxidation leads to nitrogen oxides. With sulphur dioxide, no selectivity problem rises.
