Nitrocellulose with vinylidene chloride

Recently Kargin, Usmanov and Aikhodzhayev [7] prepared a grafted copolymer of nitrocellulose with vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride. The method roughly consists in the formation of free macro-radicals of nitrocellulose (through y-irra-diation or — more effectively — ozonization of nitrocellulose). After that, the monomer of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride is reacted with the macro-radical in the presence of a redox catalyst. This eventually gives a copolymer of the following diagrammatic structure ... 

In order to confer such necessary properties as heat sealability and moistureproofness, the base cellulose film is topcoated with a lacquer of either modified nitrocellulose or vinylidene chloride copolymer. The former system was developed in the late 1920 s and is based on nitrocellulose plasticised with organic esters. In addition, paraffin wax and resins are added to confer moistureproofness. This type of coating can be modified to give only partial moistureproofness or, if necessary, can be made non-heat sealing. 

A possible way to lower the cost of fibers and films of regenerated cellulose would be to run cellulose through a twin-screw ultrasonic extruder with a minimum of the solvent and passing the exudate through a stream of hot air to recover the solvent for reuse. This stronger cellophane could be used in place of many plastic films used today. The high moisture vapor transmission of cellophane is reduced by a coating of nitrocellulose or poly(vinylidene chloride), which also makes the film heat-sealable.79 Cel-...
