Dinitronaphthalene has been prepared previously from diazotized 4-nitro-l-naphthylamine by a modified Sandmeyer procedure, - from 5,8-dinitrotetralin by dehydrogenation, by the deamination of l,4-dinitro-2-naphthylamine, and by the decomposition of 4-nitro-l-naphthalenediazonium cobaltinitrite. In some experiments a few milliliters of dilute hydrochloric acid (1 1) or sulfuric acid (1 1) was added to facilitate the crystallization of the 4-nitro-l-naphthylamine. 

This method is essentially that described by Goldhahn. 4-Nitro-l-naphthylamine has also been prepared by the nitration of a-naphthylamine, acetyl-a-naphthylamine, and ethyl-1-naphthyloxamate, by the oxidation of 4-nitroso-l-naphthyl-amine, and by reaction of 4-chloro-l-nitronaphthalene with ammonia. ...
