Nitella translucens

In 1972, Williamson43 used two organisms, Chara corralina and Nitella translucens, to examine the effects of CB on cytoplasmic streaming. Whole cells from rhizoidal and small leaf internode tissue were treated with the metabolite at concentrations of 1-50 pg/mL in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). There was a concentration, time dependent result so that 50 pg/mL inhibited streaming in a few minutes, whereas it took 6 h to induce the same effect with 1 pg/mL. Washing the cells with a DMSO solution, used at the same concentration in which the CB had... [Pg.273]

As a specific example, we will use the Goldman equation to evaluate the membrane potential across the plasma membrane of Nitella translucens. The concentrations of K+, Na+, and Cl- in the external bathing solution and in its... [Pg.125]

Figure 3-13. For the steady-state condition in the light, the three active fluxes across the plasma membrane of the large internodal cells of Nitella translucens are balanced by net passive K+ and Cl-effluxes and a net passive Na+ influx (see Fig. 3-7). In an actual study on the cells of Nitella translucens, the S for Na in the cytoplasm was —66 mV, the value for E (cytoplasm/ external solution) was —138 mV. Thus although the ratio C /C" was 14, the sodium was at a lower electrochemical potential in the cytoplasm than in the external solution and from this data the flux ratio for Na+ should be 12/1. However, instead of a strongly... [Pg.218]
