Nido-decaborane

The carborane 64c was characterized by a consistent set of NMR data, ab initio MO calculations, and by X-ray structure analysis [88]. The synthetic potential of 64c is indicated by its reaction with Fe(CO)3 fragments to give 69 [87]. The di-ferracarborane 69 is isostructural with nido-decaborane(14), because two BH and four BH(H) fragments were replaced by two isolobal Fe(CO)3 and four CH fragments, respectively. [Pg.296]

As early as 1949, Pimental and Pitzer suggested135 that the skeletal bonding in nido-decaborane [BioH14] could be conveniently described in terms of a free electron model similar to those used for bulk metals136. Such a method had previously been applied to... [Pg.57]

Ethylene and BjHn similarly form both CjHjBjHm and (C2H5)2B5Hg. Hydroboration of cyclohexene with BioHi2[S(CH3)2]2 produces 9-cyclohexyl-5(7)-dimethylsul-fide-nido-decaborane(ll), B,oH,(CfiH,)[S(CH3)2]. Also, propylene reacts with (H30)2Bi2H,2-5 H2O to afford [C3H7-Bi2H,J -. [Pg.173]

Polyhedral Boron Hydrides. Although relatively large quantities of polyhedral boron hydrides and carboranes have been produced under various government contracts, these materials are not currendy produced on a regular commercial basis. Pentaborane(9) nido- and decaborane(14) and carboranes, such as the ortho and meta-carboranes closo-1 1 well as various other derivatives, are... [Pg.254]

The nido-carborane anion, 7,8-C2B9H12, and derivatives are generally formed by deboronating ort o-carboranes with suitable bases (COMC (1982) 5.4.2.6.6) but a direct route to two derivatives of the anion has been developed in good yields from decaborane and polarized alkynes.78... [Pg.52]

While the parent carboranes can be made from formaldehyde and decaborane, carboranes with substituents at the cage carbon can easily be synthesized from the appropriate aldehyde. For example, benzaldehyde and B10H14 give the zW(9-6-Ph-6-CB9Hn anion in 94% yield.92 The phenyl carborane formed is nido- not arachno- but subsequent carborane products can be made using similar reagents as for the parent arachno-6-CB9H14-.93... [Pg.54]

There are other routes to nido-7and derivatives. Decaborane, BioHi4, with F1CHO, MeCOCCH, or... [Pg.64]

Apart from incorporation of a silicon vertex into the decaborane skeleton by salt elimination reactions, the controlled nucleophilic degradation of the disilaborane Me2Si2BioHio with NaOH is another versatile method for the preparation of the nido-silaborate, [MeSiBioHi2], which is depicted in Scheme 3.3-9 [29]. [Pg.316]

Some carboranes have formulae compatible with both classically bonded and nonclassically bonded structures and exhibit valence isomerism. The tet-racarbaborane Me4C4B6Et6 is one such. As prepared by dimerization of the small closo carborane Me2C2B3Et3 [Eq. (3.2)], it has a classical adamantane-type structure, with its four CMe units linked through BEt units (1). However, when heated it isomerizes to the expected nido carborane structure (2) with a skeletal structure like that of decaborane. ... [Pg.93]

A zwitterionic [RNHj]" [CB,oH,2] obtained from the action of alkylisocyanides on decaborane(14) is a cage insertion of one carbon atom into a borone hydride framework to give another compound (as a nitrogen derivative) in the nido-carborane series, CB H +4 ... [Pg.181]

Tandem ene reactions of phosphaalkynes with terminal alkenes have been followed by P NMR spectroscopy, and as part of a multinuclear NMR spectroscopy study, P NMR was used to follow the reaction of phosphaalkynes with decaborane to form new phosphaborane compounds (phosphine-methylene ylides), nido-RC(H)PBioHi3. [Pg.332]
