New materials from

This textile fiber is the first man-made organic textile fiber prepared wholly from new material from the mineral kingdom. Though wholly fabricated from such common raw material as coal, water, and air, nylon can be fashioned into filaments as strong as steel, as fine as spider s web, yet more elastic than any of the common natural fibers. 

In this contribution we have also underlined an emerging aspect of solid-state chemistry, namely that solvent-free solid-state synthetic procedures can be exploited to construct bottom-up new materials from molecular or ionic building blocks. This is at the core of molecular crystal engineering [81]. It is fascinating to think that the crystal engineer may free him/herself from operating with solvent to achieve the bottom-up construction of supramolecular materials completely from sohd to sohd . 

The culmination of Barrow s important investigations was the production in 1959 of an alkaline engine-sized paper loaded with calcium carbonate (19). The sizing was accomplished using new materials from Hercules, Inc., Kymene and Aquapel. This paper, made from 50% Swedish sulfate and 50% soda pulp, met Barrow s stringent requirement... 

We have come a long way in the development of exciting new materials from layered phases with catalytic potential, but as with the zeolites, the volumes of information published on the synthesis and characterization of these materials far exceeds the reports of their actual catalytic behavior. There is still work to be done.

Compared with the established technologies and techniques of materials science, vapor synthesis has really yet to declare itself. Apart from catalysis related applications, there have been few direct assaults on new materials from VS. A brief suggestive sketch is given below where some of the early manifestations of this potential can been seen. 

Natural products chemistry involves the isolation of new materials from living organisms and determination of their structure and biological activity. Natural products chemistry often provides leads for new kinds of pharmaceutical activity.

In June 1998, at USDA-ARS s Southern Regional Research Center we were asked to design new materials from cotton and bagasse-derived cellulose 1 that could serve emerging needs in the textile, composites, and chiral materials markets. At that time, we had synthesized and characterized sucrose-based epoxies (1) and we wanted to extend our work to cellulose-derived epoxies and take advantage of existing cellulose epoxy literature (2). We chose to work with cellulose ethers, because unlike its esters, ethers are kinetically and thermodynamically more stable, and they appeared easy to prepare and characterize.
