Neutral nonlinear optical properties

Polyanilines. Oxidoreductases also catalyze oxidative polymerization of aromatic amines. HRP induced the polymerization of aniline. In the HRP-catalyzed polymerization under neutral conditions, the polymer with complicated structure was obtained in low yields (295). The resulting polymer showed good third-order nonlinear optical properties (296). 

Further investigations of the nonlinear optical properties of neutral phenylsubstituted o-carboranes, where the carboranes are substituted on both carbon atoms have been described by Murphy et al. as well (1993b, Part 2). One example of a diphenylsubstituted carborane is shown in Figure 13.10. 

There have been many important advances in computational capability and theoretical methodolgy since the articles on Li doped Ceo noted above have appeared. While these articles establish a clear interest in the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the prototypical neutral and cation, the time is ripe for a significantly improved treatment. That is the goal of our current work. 

Over the past decades dodecahydro-c/oio-dodecaborate(2-) derivatives have been investigated experimentally and theoretically studies have shown that the cluster has favorable properties for application as nonlinear optical materials, compounds in which the dodecaborate acts as an electron donor and is connected to an electron-withdrawing substituent. In contrast to dodecaborate, neutral icosahedral c/oTO-carboranes behave as strong electron acceptors several investigations and theoretical studies confirm this effect.
