Neurons neurodegeneration-related loss

Even if properly prepared, most investigators observe spontaneous epileptiform activity in slice cultures, beginning at 5 wk in vitro (17—19). If slices are properly prepared, no spontaneous neurodegeneration should be observed until 5-6 wk in vitro Spontaneous neuronal loss begins soon after spontaneous epileptiform activity, suggesting that the two are related. This is consistent with a recent report that spontaneous neuronal loss in slice cultures can be suppressed with glutamate receptor antagonists (20). [Pg.22]
