Nernst effect, transverse

Nernst effect - The production of an electric field in a conductor subject to an applied magnetic field and containing a transverse temperature gradient. The electric field is perpendicular to the magnetic field and the temperature gradient. [Pg.110]

When a heat current is made to flow in a conductor perpendicular to a magnetic field, in addition to the electric field produced by the Nernst effect, one also observes a transverse temperature gradient which is perpendicular to both the heat current and the magnetic field (Fig. Id). This effect was independently observed in 1888 by Righi and Leduc. The Righi-Leduc coefficient is defined by... [Pg.368]
