Neodymium oxide was first isolated from a mixture of oxides called didymia. The elemeut ueodymium is the secoud most abuudaut lanthanide elemeut in the igneous rocks of Earth s crust. Hydrated neodymium(III) salts are reddish and anhydrous neodymium compounds are blue. The compounds neodymium(III) chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, perchlorate, and acetate are very soluble neodymium sulfate is somewhat soluble the fluoride, hydroxide, oxide, carbonate, oxalate, and phosphate compoimds are insoluble.

Both lanthanum and neodymium double sulfates are precipitated. The general formula of the double sulfates is xMe2S04yLn2(S04)3 H20. The co-precipitated salts are potassium hydrogen sulfate, sodium sulfate or lanthanum/neodymium sulfate, depending on the composition of the strip solution. Precipitation occurs only in the aqueous phase.

The compound N2H5Nd(S04)2-H20 is also prepared by isothermal evaporation ( 50°C) of an aqueous solution containing neodymium sulfate and hydrazinium sulfate in a molar ratio of 1 3. Efforts to readily prepare the corresponding sulfates of heavier elements (Eu to Lu) by this method have been unsuccessful due to the separation of starting materials.
