Nebuchadnezzar

At the time when we contemplate the extent of the Assyrian empire after it had regained from Egypt the countries from the Euphrates to the Nile—at the moment when Nebuchadnezzar was lifted up with pride in the city which he had built, and the lofty branches of the tree seemed to reach to heaven1, the Almighty was about to cut it down, and to raise up a king, whose right hand he was to hold, to subvert nations before him, and to loose the loins of kings. [Pg.61]

Belshazzar was the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar, of whom Jeremiah had intimated that he should continue to reign over Babylon till great kings should serve themselves of him... [Pg.70]

From these Nebuchadnezzar had chosen the persons who were to stand in his presence, and some of these, no doubt, were continued among the confidential servants of Cyrus, and appointed by him to direct the return of the Jews from their captivitys. It is difficult not to believe that some of these drew the attention of Cyrus to their sacred books,-as Josephus expressly informs us that Daniel did, and he no doubt counselled the king to execute the Divine command, which he was especially appointed to fulfil. [Pg.76]

Medical practitioners and historians have traced the origins of clinical trials to biblical accounts of dietary comparisons under Nebuchadnezzar II, James... [Pg.50]

There is no evidence that the ancient Israelites ever knew of the plant, although several attempts have been made to prove that they did. Because the Arabs sometimes referred to hashish as grass, some writers have argued that the "grass" eaten by Nebuchadnezzar was actually hashish. Another contention is that the phantasmagoria of composite creatures and brilliant colors seen by Ezekiel are unintelligible except from the standpoint of hashish intoxication. [Pg.17]

To see it thus, from an armored fighting vehicle, guarded by weapons which alone could have destroyed the army of Nebuchadnezzar or one of Vespasian s legions, gave me a queer feeling in the pit of my stomach. [Pg.37]

Using accepted Biblical chronology the fifth year of Rehoboam would be about 917BCE, about five hundred and sixty years after Thutmose Ill s conquest. The Atbash Cipher solution decodes Shishak to Babel, meaning Babylon (see Appendix 10). " The Babylon connection means the fifth year of Rehoboam could well be another three hundred and twenty years later, in 597BCE. In this year King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon invaded Israel, destroyed the Temple and carried the people into Exile. [Pg.31]

We therefore have a dazzling array of dates some eight hundred and eighty years apart, from the conquest of Tuthmose III to the time of King Nebuchadnezzar. There must be another explanation. [Pg.31]

Left a remnant to Israel, and did not give them over to destruction. But in the Time of Wrath He visited them (three hundred and ninety years after He had given them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon). And He caused to spring forth from Israel and Aaron a root of His planting to inherit the land. [Pg.156]

At first Nebuchadnezzar imprisoned the prophet Jeremiah but gave him food, cloths and money, and released him to travel anywhere he wished. Jeremiah escorted his nieces. King Zedekiah s daughters, to Mizpah, which is Fort Dan. [Pg.170]

Let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain. Scholars point out that Ezekiel s prophecy applied to ancient King Zedekiah, who Nebuchadnezzar conquered in 586-587 BCE. Nebuchadnezzar executed Zedekiah s sons and Zedekiah never regained the throne. From that time, there has been no Davidic king of Judah... [Pg.186]

Nebuchadnezzar. A 20-quart wine bottle (the largest size). [Pg.212]

In recent years, from the Edinburgh symposium published in Prophecy in the Book of Jeremiah (fh. 9 above) to Jeremiah the Historian The Book of Jeremiah as a Source for the History of the Near East in the Time of Nebuchadnezzar, in Studies on the Text and Versions of the Hebrew Bible in Honour of Robert Gordon, ed. G. Khan and D. Upton (VTSup 149 Leiderr Brill, 20t2), 87-98. [Pg.16]

The proposal today among many students of the Old Testament is that the basic frame of the Deuteronomlstic History belongs to the seventh century, and is in this way related to the time of Kingjosiah of Judah. The problem with this idea is that the only information we have about this time is found in the same documents thought to have been put into writing at this time—a clear example of the kind of circular argumentation so common in biblical studies. Fiuthermore, it is evident (from the last note in 2 Kgs 25 27-30) that the date of this composition, or its conclusion, cannot be before 562 bce (the year of Nebuchadnezzar s death). [Pg.226]

The same hour was the thing fulfilled on Nebuchadnezzar and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, til his hairs were grown like eagles feathers, and his nails like birds claws. [Pg.769]

It is a matter of historical record that Nebuchadnezzar had a period of madness, but other commentators attribute this to porphyria or tertiary syphilis. [Pg.769]
