Table VII presents a summary of calorimetric measurements of the differential heat of adsorption of ammonia, water, and carbon dioxide on the sodium form of ZSM-5 zeolite. Ammonia adsorption at 416 K (97.147) shows that NaZSM-5 zeolite is weakly acidic, whereas CO adsorption (147) indicates that in addition there are some weak basic sites. It should be noted that of the two samples studied with ammonia adsorption one was 70% H exchanged and the sodium content of the other was not given. Water adsorption on NaZSM-5 displayed unusual behavior, with a steep increase in the differential heat of adsorption at high surface coverages (166). An adsorption mechanism was proposed to explain these findings in which adsorption occurs first on the hydrophilic sites, consisting of sodium cations and framework anions where water molecules are bound by dipole-field interactions. Further adsorption takes place near these sites through weak interaction with zeolite surfaces, and when the number of water molecules close to these sites exceeds a certain value, they tend to reorient by forming clathrate-like struc-... An adsorption micro calorimeter for the simultaneous determination of the differential heat of adsorption and the adsorption isotherm for gas-solid systems are designed, built, and tested. For this purpose, a Calvet heat-conducting microcalorimeter is developed and is connected to a gas volumetric unit built in stainless steel to record adsorption isotherms. The micro calorimeter is electrically calibrated to establish its sensitivity and reproducibility, obtaining K=154.34 0.23 WV h The adsorption microcalorimeter is used to obtain adsorption isotherms and the corresponding differential heats for the adsorption ofCO on a reference solid, such as a NaZSM-5 type zeolite. Results for the behavior of this system are compared with those obtained with commercial equipment and with other studies in the literature. [Pg.131]

A modern adsorption microcalorimeter was built for the simultaneous measurement of isotherms and adsorption heats, establishing its correct functioning through adequate calibration of both the calorimeter part and the volumetric equipment of the adsorption part. For this purpose, the microcalorimeter calibration constant was found with values that go from 134.11 0.19 WV" to 156.67 0.23 WV. The adsorption isotherm was determined for a type NAZSM-5 zeolite as a reference solid to establish the correct functioning of the equipment. Micropore volume and superficial area were determined to be 0.20 cmVg and 296 m /g, respectively. These results agree very well with those obtained with commercial equipment. Finally, the differential heats of adsorption, for the same solid, were measured. The analysis of results gives valuable information about the studied C02/NaZSM-5 system, which is in concordance with other studies in the literature. [Pg.136]
