Naked gold

Nevertheless, unsupported powdered gold (mean diameter, 76 nm) proved to be active for CO oxidation [138,139], and so did naked gold [140] and gold nanotubes [141] under mild conditions. In addition, investigations by Flytzani-Stephanopoulos and co-workers [142-144] on the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction (see Sect. 6.4.1) have challenged the idea that gold nanoparticles are essential, but these investigators have not exhaustively proved the complete absence of Au(0). 

Scheme 4 illustrates the results obtained when complex 1 reacts with nearly naked gold or silver metal centersJ The reaction with 1 equivalent of [Au(R)3(OEt2)] (R = CgFs or C6F3H2) affords the trinuclear complexes 19 and 20. The structure of 19 has been established by a single X-ray study. The initial di-auracycle remains intact and one Au(C6F5)3 moiety is now bonded through a gold atom to one gold atom in the diauracycle, as shown in the Scheme 4. The two Au( I)...

Then, while the naked gold particles are expressing the highest activity, 70s, the addition of different adsorbing material, in order to generate in situ 0.5% w/w of supported gold is considered. 

In the second investigation dealing with naked gold particles, the most important result was the detection of hydrogen peroxide instead of water as the reduction product of dioxygen.
