Hemoglobin, which represents more than 95 K> of the protein of the red blood cell, contains about 60% of the body s iron. Myoglobin is an oxygen storage protein and represents under 1.0% of the protein of muscle, Myoglobin contains about 4% of the body s iron. iTius, about 645 of the body s iron occurs in proteins that transport or store oxygen. 

Carbon monoxide also binds to the muscle-boimd haem protein, myoglobin. Myoglobin serves to transport oxygen to the mitochondria for oxidative phosphorylation and acts as an oxygen reserve for fhe muscle in times of high physical activity. The affinity of cardiac myoglobin for CO is around fhree times that of skeletal muscle myoglobin.
