Fig. 16.2 Mottled enamel, (a) Severe mottling. Note the wear at the coronal edge of the central incisors, the brown color, and holes on the coronal half of the crowns and the opaque white color interspersed with brown spots on the apical half (Figure downloaded from The Free Dictionary http //img. tfd.com/mosby/thumbs/500087-fxl2.jpg). (b) Mild mottling. Note the speckles of opaque white color on the labial surface of the central incisors. Other teeth may be similarly affected (Figure is a gift from Dr. Kenneth W. Stephens, University of Glasgow College of Dentistry)... Fig. 16.2 Mottled enamel, (a) Severe mottling. The relationship between fluoride and dental caries was first noted in the early part of the 20th century when it was observed that residents of certain areas of USA developed brown stains on their teeth. In the 1930s, it was observed that the prevalence and severity of this type of mottled enamel was directly related to high amounts of ingested fluoride [34],... [Pg.52]

Marble is metamorphosed limestone (i.e. limestone which has been fully recrystallised and hardened under hydrothermal conditions). Marbles derived from pure limestones consist simply of white calcite. When impurities such as dolomite, iron and clay are present, the marble acquires its characteristic mottled or veined appearance. (It should be noted that stone-masons often... [Pg.14]

NOTE WELL The fluorine content of foods varies widely and is affected by the fluorine content of the environment (the air, soil and/or water) in the areas in which they were produced. Nevertheless, some foods do cumulate and contain more fluorine than others. Remember that it s the total fluorine ingested over an extended period of time that s important. There is hazard of fluorisis (evidenced by mottling of the teeth) (1) when the fluorine content of drinking water exceeds 2.5 ppm (2) when the amount of fluorine ingested exceeds 30 to 40 ppm of dry matter of the diet or (3) when a person consumes (in food and water) fluorine in excess of 20 mg/day over an extended period of time. [Pg.373]
