Locher and Mott-Smith took a large number of photographs with a Geiger counter just above the expansion chamber, and found that when the counter was excited at the moment of the expansion, then a track was found on the photograph. The direction of the track in the chamber was such as to pass through the counter. These experiments show clearly that the tracks obtained are really cosmic ray tracks. [Pg.82]

Integral methods include all those which attempt solution of the moment equation (Maxwell s equation of transfer) of the Boltzmann equation. The well known integral methods which have been applied include Mott-Smith s bimodal distribution [2.100], Grad s 13 moment equations [2.101], Lees two-stream Maxwellian [2.102], and Waldmann s higher-order hydrodynamics and boundary conditions [2.103]. [Pg.41]

It is a pleasure to acknowledge the considerable contributions of my co-workers, S. A. McLaughlin, G. N. Mott, W. F. Smith, and N. J. Taylor to this work. I also would like to thank the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council for its generous support. [Pg.194]

Another example of this kind of transition is shown in table 11.1, taken from the work of Smith and Kmetko [601]. It is a quasiperiodic table of all the transition elements and lanthanides in the periodic table, arranged in order of mean localised radius in the vertical direction, and adjusted horizontally so that filled and empty d and / subshells coincide. What Smith and Kmetko discovered is that a broad diagonal sweep across this table separates metals with localised electron properties (magnets) from those with itinerant electron properties (conductors). This boundary (shown as a shaded curve in the figure) is the locus of the Mott transition. Metals lying along this curve are sensitive to pressure effects (Ce has an isomorphic phase transition from the a to the 7 phase at about 1 kbar, U becomes... [Pg.409]
