Model Claus reaction

Using the Claus reaction as a model reaction, Sloot et al. [1990] has experimentally measured reaction conversions and verified the above concept of confining and shifting a reaction plane or zone for two opposing reactant streams inside a porous catalytic membrane. The agreement between the experimentally observed and calculated (based on the dusty-gas model) molar flux of H2S is reasonably good [Sloot et al., 1992]. The simplified model based on Equation (10-101) is a good approximation for dilute systems where the mole fractions of the reactants and products are lower than that of the inert gas. 

This reactor, sketched in Figure 24.2g, was developed especially to prevent slip in reactions required to be strictly stoichiometric. Modeling of a CNMR-E has been attempted for both fast irreversible and reversible reactions (Sloot et al., 1990, 1992 Zaspalis et al., 1991 Veldsink et al., 1992), notably the Claus reaction 2H2S -I- SO2 —> (3/8)Sg + 2H2O. This concept can also be used in partial oxidations in organic technology, for example, partial oxidation of ethylene to acetaldehyde (Harold et al., 1992). The heterogeneously catalyzed reaction of starting materials A and B can follow different mechanisms [Claus 1996, Ertl 1990]. The models of Langmuir-Hinshelwood, Eley-Rideal, and Mars-van Krevelen are widely used in practice.
